Maintenance, repairs, and follow-up of Complex Equipment

Maintenance, repairs, and follow-up of Complex Equipment

When you, or a third-party funder on your behalf, invest in complex equipment like a wheelchair or mobility aid, regular maintenance and timely repairs become crucial for keeping it in top condition.  You can rely on a structured process to ensure your equipment continues to function optimally, providing the mobility and independence you need.

Regular Maintenance

Regular upkeep of your mobility equipment is essential to prolong its life and ensure it performs well. Whether it’s a manual or power wheelchair, routine checks are key to preventing unexpected breakdowns. Routine tasks like tightening bolts, adjusting wheel locks, and checking for wear and tear should be part of your regular care routine.

Please refer to the user manual that comes with your product for further information on appropriate regular servicing and maintenance. It’s important to adhere to these guidelines.

At Allied Medical, we have a network of subcontractors nationally who can provide regular servicing options to prevent equipment issues before they arise. Whether it's a scheduled or urgent repair, our subcontractors have teams of experienced technicians here to help.

A proactive approach to maintenance can also extend the lifespan of your equipment and improve its performance.

Additionally, accessories such as cushions and back supports should be cleaned and inspected to ensure they maintain their shape and effectiveness. Regular cleaning, particularly for seating and positioning products, can reduce hygiene risks and prevent discomfort.

Where the product has been supplied by a funding body like ACC or the Ministry of Social Development, annual servicing is carried out on a scheduled basis and is generally covered by the funder.

Regular weekly and monthly servicing and maintenance as outlined in the product user manual sit with the user and their support network to arrange and carry out.

If you purchased the product yourself, for annual servicing please arrange for this to take place through your local subcontractor – This will be charged to you by the subcontractor when carried out.

Common Signs of Wear

It's essential to keep an eye on your equipment and note any signs that might indicate the need for repair. Look out for:

  • Unusual noises or decreased performance
  • Wheelchair batteries no longer hold a charge
  • Loose or ineffective wheel locks
  • Worn tires that lack traction
  • Swivel issues with front wheels (casters)

If you notice any of these issues, it’s important not to delay repairs. Prompt action can prevent minor issues from escalating into major problems that could leave you stranded or compromise your safety.

Repairs and Technician Support

You can potentially arrange covered repairs for any product via our subcontractor network, within its warranty timeframe, provided the product has been used following all manufacturer’s recommendations. For service policies within or outside the warranty or to arrange a repair, please contact the funder of your product with the product’s serial number to find your nearest technician: Accessible or Enable New Zealand. If your equipment is older, a replacement may be recommended.

Follow-Up and Adjustments

Over time, your needs may change, and so might your equipment. Whether it’s due to a medical condition, a change in posture, or new activities like starting a job or school, follow-up appointments with your therapist or supplier are essential. They can make adjustments to your chair’s setup or recommend more suitable equipment.

Regular follow-ups ensure that your equipment evolves with you, adapting to your body’s changing needs and helping you remain active and comfortable.

At Allied Medical, we understand the importance of maintaining your equipment for long-term use. Our team is here to support you with maintenance, repairs, and ongoing assessments to ensure your mobility solutions work as hard as you do.
