Choosing the Right Ramp: A Helpful Guide

Choosing the Right Ramp: A Helpful Guide

Finding the right ramp for your mobility needs can make a significant difference in everyday comfort, safety and independence. Whether you're looking to navigate a front step, access a vehicle or overcome a raised doorway threshold, the right solution depends on a few key factors: the environment, the type of mobility aid being used and how often the ramp will be needed.

We stock a wide range of portable ramps to suit many different situations. Below is a simple guide to help you work out which type of ramp may suit your needs best.

How to Work Out the Right Ramp Length

Choosing the correct ramp length is essential for safety and ease of use. A ramp that’s too steep can be difficult to navigate and potentially unsafe, especially for manual wheelchair users.

Recommended slope ratios in New Zealand:

  • 1:12 for wheelchairs and scooters – standard for regular use
  • 1:10 for manual use with light loads or short ramps
  • 1:8 for temporary or infrequent use only

Example:

For a 20 cm high step:

  • 1:12 slope = 2.4 m ramp
  • 1:10 slope = 2.0 m ramp
  • 1:8 slope = 1.6 m ramp (temporary use)

To calculate ramp length:
Multiply the height (in metres) by the slope factor.
For example, for a 0.25 m high threshold:

  • 0.25 m × 12 = 3.0 m ramp (for a 1:12 slope)

This is especially important when choosing longer ramps for access to vehicles or buildings. While our smaller threshold ramps don’t always require the full 1:12 ratio, it’s helpful to know the guidelines so you can make informed choices.
