Many older adults spend the majority of their time at home, so making this space as comfortable and safe as possible is essential. There are many hazards that can be found throughout the home that should be attended to. Learn what general hazards to look for and how to overcome them.

Ensure Home Accessibility

  • Install ramps where wheelchair or rollator access is necessary
  • Keep halls and high traffic areas clear, and clean up clutter that could contribute to tripping
  • Fix uneven paths and driveways
  • Clean up spills immediately that could cause slipping

Make an Emergency Plan

  • Keep telephones with emergency and personal contact information accessible, and consider investing in Personal Medical Alarms
  • Come up with an emergency plan in case of a fire, earthquake, or other natural disaster
  • Keep flashlights, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers easily accessible
  • Test smoke alarms frequently
  • Wear a mask if you are unwell and limit contact with elderly loved ones who may be more susceptible to getting sick

Household Hazards

  • Install grab bars and rails in bathrooms and on staircases to prevent tripping and fall
  • Store away or remove dangerous objects such as power tools and poisonous cleaning supplies
  • Add additional lighting, especially on stairs and walkways
  • Keep the home warm in Winter and cool in Summer
